I was already a confident tutor when I joined. What Shield's Defence and Veteran family training added was context: what a posting or a parent on deployment actually does to a child's focus and their learning. There's a Shield approach you're expected to work to, and within that you've got real room to be creative and plan lessons in your own style.
These sessions matter to the students well beyond the marks. A lot of these kids have changed schools three or four times, and being the one consistent hour each week where they sit down and work through a subject properly is a bigger deal than I expected. You see the confidence come back before the grades do.
I've done private tutoring before, and the difference here is the standard everything is held to. Bookings, the funding side and the follow-up with families are all handled properly, so nothing slips and no parent is left chasing. That's what lets you give the student your full attention every session. It's also one cohort, Defence and Veteran families, so everything is built around what these kids actually need. The impact you have on a family is far bigger than anything I saw in general tutoring.
A lot of the students I work with have additional learning needs, and I was nervous about that at first. There's always someone to call, and the team will help you work out an approach that suits the student. They're quick, they're approachable, and they genuinely care how the sessions go.
