About Shield Tuition

At Shield Tuition, our mission is to empower the children of Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans and active serving members by delivering high-quality, compassionate, and personalised educational support.

We understand the unique challenges faced by military families — frequent relocations, service-related injuries, or parents away on deployment. Our tutors provide stability, empathy, and encouragement — helping students thrive academically and personally.

What Our Tutors Say

Working for Shield Tuition has been great. They offer me the flexibility to take on students for times that suit both my students and me, which has allowed me to sustain a steady income while not detracting from my personal university studies. I think it is the perfect role for someone who is currently studying like me
— James, Shield Tuition Tutor
I love tutoring with Shield Tuition. Kye, Jesse and the administration team are excellent. It is always a pleasure helping students find their way through a school subject that they can’t quite grasp, and seeing them come out victorious.

Who we are looking for

Primary and middle school tutors

Our primary and middle school tutors play a vital role in helping younger students develop strong learning foundations, confidence, and curiosity. Many of our students are in the early years of schooling, so tutors must be skilled at making lessons engaging, age-appropriate, and easy to follow — even in an online setting.

All tutoring is conducted online, so tutors should be confident using learning our digital tools and able to keep younger learners focused, supported, and motivated throughout each session. Building rapport, maintaining structure, and using interactive strategies are key to success.

If you enjoy working with younger students, helping them grasp new concepts, and watching their confidence grow week by week, this role is an excellent fit.

High school tutors

We’re looking for confident and capable tutors who can support high school students across core academic subjects such as English and Mathematics, as well as those who wish to specialise in specific senior subjects like Sciences, Humanities, or Advanced Maths.

Our ideal high school tutors have a solid understanding of the Australian secondary curriculum, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt lessons to suit each student’s learning style and academic goals.

Tertiary tutors

Our tertiary tutors are specialised in tutoring a particular focus area (e.g. medicine, law, economics, engineering, etc.). Because universities often offer inclusive tutoring services, tutoring is in less demand at a tertiary level than it is at a school level, so please bear this in mind if you wish to only apply as a tertiary tutor. We accept applications for tertiary tutors for any person who has completed their first year in a given university course.

Essential requirements

  • Completion of Year 12 English and General Mathematics (or higher preferred). Applicants with strong Year 10 results in these subjects are also encouraged to apply.

  • A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) or the ability to obtain one before commencing.

  • A current driver’s licence is preferred but not essential.

  • A working laptop or desktop computer with webcam and reliable internet connection.

  • Strong communication skills, reliability, and punctuality in all professional interactions.

  • A passion for education and supporting younger students in their academic growth.

Preferable attributes

  • Enrolled in, or completed, a university degree (of Bachelor’s level or higher).

  • Previous tutoring experience is looked upon favourably.

  • Availability of over ten (5) hours per week.

  • Insofar as you will be tutoring mathematics, candidates who took advanced mathematics subjects at school and/or in university will be looked upon favourably.

Tutor’s duties

  • Deliver engaging and effective online tutoring sessions that support our Defence Families Academic Program and help students build academic confidence, consistency, and success.

  • Stay up to date with Shield Tuition’s procedures, expectations, and online teaching standards to ensure consistent service delivery and student support.

  • Align with Shield Tuition’s mission and values, demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and respect for every student and family you support.

  • Communicate promptly and clearly with students, parents and Shield Tuition staff regarding student progress, attendance, availability, or any issues that arise — keeping all informed at all times.

  • Be diligent, reliable, and punctual

  • Assist students with homework, assignments, exam preparation, and ongoing academic goals, adapting lessons to suit each student’s individual learning needs and stage.

  • Maintain accurate lesson notes and uphold confidentiality, integrity, and care in every session.
